2001 East Coast Surfing Championships - PRO-AM SURFING COMPETITION

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- On August 22nd, an estimated 600 surfers will travel from around the world to compete in the 39th annual East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The ECSC is the oldest continuously running surfing contest in North America. From humble beginnings in 1963, this event has evolved into a spectacle that now draws over 100,000 surfing fans and beach lovers to watch the world's best amateur and professional surfers compete for bragging rights, prizes and cash.

The contest is open to surfers of all levels. Competitive divisions include surfing, bodyboarding, and longboarding. Each event is subdivided into age groups for men, women, and children. For entry information, call (757) 456-1535, 1-800-861-SURF or visit our website at www.surfecsc.com.

THE PRO DIVISION:
The United States Surfing Federation is the national governing body for the sport of surfing in the United States and will be administering the event. This year's Pro event boasts a $20,000 purse for the professional competition. It is a 2-star ASP rated professional event. Heat sheets and schedule of events will be posted with daily updates on www.USSURF.org. On location registration for the amateur event occurs on Sunday, August 19th at Wave Riding Vehicles (WRV) at 19th and Cypress Ave. from 5 - 7PM. Final registration for Professionals occurs at WRV on the 22nd from 5 - 7PM.

THE AMATEUR BRACKET:
Competition in this year's amateur event is likely the fiercest in recent memory due to the concurrent running of the United States Surfing Team trials. On Monday and Tuesday August 20-21, the US Team Trials final event to select the US Team to represent our country at international team events will be held at 1st Street Jetty. The country's top amateurs are all expected to be in attendance. For more information on the US Surfing Federation, call 888-9US-SURF.

Story Ideas: International Competition:
The world-wide draw of the event became clear during last year's contest as Brazilian, Marco Polo powered his way to the title. He found himself in the final heat of the competition, fighting off a truly international cast comprised of a fellow Brazilian, a South African, and an Australian.

An eye on the weather:
It is no mystery why these professionals are willing to leave great surf in their home countries to travel to Virginia Beach. It's all about timing. ECSC is held on the last week of August, near the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane season. Storm activity thousands of miles south often generates fantastic waves and surfing conditions under perfectly clear skies in Virginia Beach. During this time of year, there are few places in the world an avid surfer would rather be.

History:
Believe it or Not! ECSC is North America's longest continuous surfing contest and the event is regularly voted one of the best festivals held in Virginia. For a complete list of all activities, sports and entertainment for the ECSC Beach Sports Festival Weekend, log onto www.surfecsc.com.
