INTERNATIONAL SURFERS TO ATTEND 40TH ANNUAL ECSC

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Some of the best surfers in the world are headed to Virginia Beach for the 40th Annual East Coast Surfing Championships August 21-25.

Attending from Venezuala are Leonel Mendoza, Jean Flores, Lucero Pacheco, Victor Copolone, Jean Schaffer, Giovanni Benitez, Daniel Reyes and Navarrese Rhannier. Peter Hill from Barbados is also competing in ECSC.

On the women’s side Holly Beck from Palos Verdes, California, currently ranked 8th on the World Qualifying Series, will try to take home first place at ECSC.

The ECSC is North America's oldest surfing contest and the second oldest continuously-run surfing contest in the world. About 100 professional surfers from around the world will compete for a $72,000 purse. There will also be hundreds of amateur surfers competing for top ranking on the amateur circuit.

ECSC has evolved over its forty years as more than just a surfing event. Dozens of people also take part in other competitions including skimboarding, volleyball, and an oceanfront 5K run. This year ECSC has teamed with Philips Fusion to bring spectators elite skateboarders, world-class BMX riders and the latest in Philips audio and video consumer electronics. Philips Fusion also features the Philips Digital Lounge & Philips Burn Center showcasing an extensive 'hands on' display of Philips products, while the Philips Vortex features DJs, guest emcees and prize giveaways.

ECSC also offers FREE live regional and national musical acts performing on a beachfront stage. The festival and all events are open to the public, free of charge. There is a fee to compete in an event.

The East Coast Surfing Championships is produced solely by the Virginia Beach Jaycees, an all volunteer organization. A portion of the proceeds raised at the event benefit the Jaycee’s many charitable projects.

For purposes of record-keeping and clarity, the forty years of ECSC are defined from the first Jaycee-sponsored surfing event in August 1963, through today, making ECSC the second-longest, continuously-run surfing competition in the world.
