Virginia Beach, Virginia - Contestants are welcome to enter the ECSC 5K race and the Meyer Skimboarding event in conjunction with the 39th annual East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) and Beach Sports Festival, Aug. 24-26, 2001 in Virginia Beach. Applications for all events are available Online at www.surfecsc.com.

The ECSC Boardwalk 5K race is one of the largest of its kind conducted by Tidewater Striders in the Hampton Roads area and routinely attracts more than 500 runners. The North-South course is flat and fast, starting on the resort area's Atlantic Avenue and finishing on the newly renovated concrete boardwalk along the beach. This event takes place on Aug. 25.

Skimboarding competitors use a thin wooden or fiberglass teardrop shaped board to skim across the shore break into the breaking waves. Competitors try to maintain balance and perform a variety of tricks while a panel of judges will score the competitors on length of ride, balance, and creativity. This event will be contested Aug. 25 and 26.

ECSC 5K RACE

Saturday, August 25th, race begins at 8 a.m.
Entry Fee:
Early registration - $12 per runner (postmarked by August 15th)
Late registration - $15 per runner (after August 15th)
Register in person at the ECSC Manpower tent at 6th Street & Oceanfront open from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 24th. Registration limited to first 700 runners. Entries accepted up to 7:30 a.m., August 25th.
Included:
All runners receive ECSC 5K tank top shirt, refreshments; door prizes awarded after the race.
Teams:
Registration $10 per team member (all must be submitted in same envelope)
Military, 3-5 runners, only fastest time scored
Coed, 4 runners (2 male, 2 female), combined time scored
No team entries or substitutions allowed on race day.

Male: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-59, 60+, wheelchair
Female:
19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50 & up, wheelchair

Awards:
Top five male & female overall, top three masters male & female, top three in each age group, top two military & coed teams, top wheelchair male & female

Meyer Skimboarding Tournament

Aug. 25 & 26. Both days: 9 a.m. (mandatory riders meeting) to approx. 3 p.m.
Entry Fee:
$20 amateur, $50 professional (includes ECSC Competitor t-shirt) Entries accepted up to 9 a.m. Saturday, August 25th

Men: Age groups 9 & under, 10-13, 14-17, 18-24, 25 & up

All ages

Awards:
Top 3 finishers in each amateur division will receive a skimboard, trophy, and gift certificate. Professional winners receive cash.

This year's Skimboarding event producer, Meyer Skimboards, has donated skimboards for use by anyone who wishes to compete but does not have their own equipment. Meyer's kind donation has made this event accessible to everyone.
