& Beach Sports Festival Virginia Beach, Virginia - Contestants are welcome to enter the ECSC 5K race and the Meyer Skimboarding event in conjunction with the 39th annual East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) and Beach Sports Festival, Aug. 24-26, 2001 in Virginia Beach. Applications for all events are available Online at www.surfecsc.com. The ECSC Boardwalk 5K race is one of the largest of its kind conducted by Tidewater Striders in the Hampton Roads area and routinely attracts more than 500 runners. The North-South course is flat and fast, starting on the resort area's Atlantic Avenue and finishing on the newly renovated concrete boardwalk along the beach. This event takes place on Aug. 25. Skimboarding competitors use a thin wooden or fiberglass teardrop shaped board to skim across the shore break into the breaking waves. Competitors try to maintain balance and perform a variety of tricks while a panel of judges will score the competitors on length of ride, balance, and creativity. This event will be contested Aug. 25 and 26. ECSC 5K RACE Meyer Skimboarding Tournament This year's Skimboarding event producer, Meyer Skimboards, has donated skimboards for use by anyone who wishes to compete but does not have their own equipment. Meyer's kind donation has made this event accessible to everyone. ECSC is North America's longest continuous surfing contest and the event is regularly voted one of the best festivals held in Virginia.
