EAST COAST SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS PIONEER DIES

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Webb Brown, chairman of the third and fourth annual East Coast Surfing Championships, died at his home in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina on February 14, 2003.

Born in Norfolk and a graduate of Norfolk Academy high school, Webb Brown lived, worked and surfed in Virginia Beach for 55 years before moving to the Outer Banks. For over 25 years, Webb was the proprietor of Webster's, a men and women's clothing store in Virginia Beach. He moved to the Outer Banks six years ago and was the owner of Outer Banks Provisioners in Kitty Hawk.

Webb loved the beach and surfing. Active in the community with several causes and organizations such as the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, Webb was also a member of the Virginia Beach Jaycees. He was a driving force in the early days of the East Coast Surfing Championships and chaired ECSC in 1965 and 1966. Webb stayed active in the event for many more years. He and several other early pioneers of ECSC maintained close friendships over the years and were present at last year's 40th Annual ECSC celebration.

Webb is survived by his wife, Claudia Peterson Brown; a son, Webster Brown III and wife Lea of Charlottesville, Va.; a daughter, Ruland Gagne and husband Rob of Norfolk; two grandchildren, a sister and brother-in-law and several stepchildren.

He touched many lives during his 62 years. Many former and current Jaycees said Webb was a true friend who will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held for Webb Brown on Friday, February 28th, 11:00 a.m. at Virginia Beach Christian Church, 2225 Rose Hall Drive.

The Virginia Beach Jaycees and the ECSC Board extend to Webb Brown's family our most heart-felt condolences along with appreciation for many years of leadership and service to the event and surfing in Virginia Beach.
