40th Annual East Coast Surfing Championships Dates Announced

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The 40th Annual East Coast Surfing Championships and Beach Sports Festival (ECSC) will be held August 21 through 25, 2002 between 2nd and 9th Streets at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

Now in its fourth decade, ECSC has continuously drawn top professional and amateur surfers to compete in this, the oldest continuously running North American surfing competition and the second oldest contest worldwide. Due to it’s traditional scheduling on the final weekend of August, ECSC is often the recipient of tropical storm swells prevalent during that time of year. This year’s contest has been elevated to a four star event on the competitive surfing circuit. This rating ensures that many of the world’s best professional surfers will converge upon Virginia Beach to vie for cash and prizes worth well over $65,000 and the title of East Coast Surfing Champion. Past winners include such notables as Marco Polo of Brazil, local legend Wes Laine, and former World Champion Tom Curren.

In addition to being the one of the country’s top surfing contests, the ECSC has also evolved into a complete beach sports and music festival. The festival will feature competitions and other beach-related activities, including, skimboarding, beach volleyball, a golf tournament, a boardwalk 5K-Run, an all-American swimsuit competition, and other extreme sports.

The weekend’s sporting events are complimented by a daily schedule of live entertainment by a number of national recording artists. Most importantly, there is no charge for spectators. All of the weekend’s events are free for open viewing by the public.

For early competition registration, a schedule of events, to purchase official ECSC merchandise or other general information call 1-800-861-SURF or check out www.surfECSC.com.

ECSC 2002’s sponsors will include: Cox Communications, Virginia is for Lovers, The City of Virginia Beach, Budweiser, Wave Riding Vehicles, 93.7 The Coast, and many more.

The ECSC is produced through the volunteer efforts of the Virginia Beach Jaycees in cooperation with the United States Surfing Federation. All ECSC profits are returned to Virginia Beach Jaycee programs and community projects.
