****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 23,2002**** 40th Annual East Coast Surfing Championships Announces Chairman Virginia Beach, Virginia The Virginia Beach Jaycees and the East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) are proud to introduce Ward C. Douglas as the Chairman of the 40th East Coast Surfing Championships. Douglas is a Naval Officer currently serving with Commander US Naval Forces Central Command. Through his dedicated support of various non-profit and leadership programs throughout Hampton Roads Douglas, Douglas has established himself over the past decade as a true steward of the community. His impressive resume boasts such honorable titles as Public Affairs Officer of the Easter Seals of Virginia, as well as, involvement with the Virginia Beach Public School System, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, and graduation from the Leadership Hampton Roads program. A genuine local, Douglas graduated from First Colonial High School in 1983. His association with the ECSC came at an early age as a competitive surfer in the late 1970s. From those inauspicious beginnings, he has taken up the mantle of leadership within the Virginia Beach Jaycees. Through his decades of participation with this great event, Douglas has functioned in many positions and capacities. As the 40th Annual Chairman of ECSC he will be one of a very select few to have ever twice chaired the event and the first solo chair since Don Meeks fifteen years ago (1987). In the fashion of a true mentor, Douglas has stated that his personal goal for ESCS 2002 consists of “training and preparing the next generation of ECSC leaders and growing the Jaycees and our community. I will measure my success by the successes of those who follow me.” Our Chairman’s dedication to the ECSC, the Jaycees, and all of Hampton Roads is only matched by his dedication to family. His wife Maggie, a community leader in her own right, is also an active contributor to the 40th ECSC. Their daughter, Dorothy Anne Douglas, is an up-and-coming young surfer who received awards for her surfing during her very first ECSC in 2001. Douglas is very enthusiastic about making the 40th Annual East Coast Surfing Championships the very best ever. In the humble fashion of a true leader, he states, “It’s a great honor to be allowed to follow in the footsteps of the Jaycee leaders, many of whom played parts in my growing up, who have made ECSC a cornerstone of our community. 2002 is going to be a great celebration of who we are, where we have come from, and the future we are growing to!
