For more Information contact Brian Edmonson, at 757-328-3042 Virginia Beach, Virginia (August 20, 2007) – For over 20 years skimboarders from all over the east coast, and even a few from the west, have traveled to Virginia Beach at the end of August to compete in the last major Skimboarding contest of the season at ECSC. Completely separate from SkimUSA which produces an East Coast Skimboarding Tour throughout the spring and summer, the ECSC Amateur Skimboarding competition is locally produced and managed by the VB Skim Series organizer Brian “Skimdaddy” Edmonson. Over the past five years the growth of skimboarding has been huge in Virginia Beach. In past years the number of skimboarders on a given day at the local hot spot, the 14th street pier, was no more than 6 or 7. Currently there are days when 15-20 skimmers are crowded in the same spot vying for the same waves for hours on end. With the average mid range skimboard costing $200 and the high end boards costing as much as $500, Virginia Beach men, women and even young children have spent tens of thousands of dollars on skimboarding and skimboard related contests. More and more local shops are beginning to carry skimboard related products - a testament to the growth of the industry. Slowly, but surely, the image of skimboarding being simply a sport enjoyed on the thin film of water left over after a wave breaks is being eroded in favor of a more exciting picture. The spectators of skimboarding see young children and young to middle age adults carving waves harder, faster, and with more agility than surfers. Truth be told, the waves in Virginia Beach are far better for skimboarding on any given day then they are for surfing.
