CONCERT LINE-UP ANNOUNCED FOR 44th ANNUAL EAST COAST SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Pietasters, Tonic and the Violent Femmes will be performing FREE at the 44th Annual East Coast Surfing Championships to be held August 23-27, 2006 at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

No Talent Show, Mofro and The Pietasters headline Friday night’s entertainment. Duburbia, Butter and Tonic will perform Saturday night. The weekend finishes with a performance by Violent Femmes.

The Pietasters are an 8 piece ska band from the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. The Pietasters say they have managed to be one of the few bands to weather the rise and fall of the ska genre in the late 90's because the band was never a gimmick. They play passionate music inspired by real life and they have a timeless sound that is relevant in any era.

Mofro is opening up for The Pietasters. Mofro's manager says the group has a great following in the East and in particular in Florida where the band sells over 1,000 tickets in every major market. J.J., the lead singer for MOFRO, has been surfing all is his life. The group has done a lot of work to maintain a relationship between the band and the surfing community.

Duburbia is a band out of Virginia Beach, Virginia. They have a wide range of sounds but are mostly influenced by Reggae and Punk Rock. Butter is also a band out of Virginia Beach. The group is relatively new but their music is sweeping the area with their eclectic mix and feel.

Tonic is an American post-grunge rock band that formed in 1993. The shining moment in the band’s career was in 2003 when they received two Grammy nominations, one for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for Take Me As I Am, and one for Best Rock Album.

The Violent Femmes, founded in the 1980’s, are popular with many different age groups largely because their fans have stayed loyal to the group. The Femmes are probably best known for the song Blister in the Sun.

The ECSC is North America’s oldest surfing contest and the second oldest continuously-run surfing contest in the world. About 100 professional surfers from around the world will compete for cash prizes. There will also be hundreds of amateur surfers competing for top ranking on the amateur circuit.

But ECSC has evolved over its forty-four years as more than just a surfing event. Dozens of people also take part in other competitions including skimboarding, pro and am volleyball and an oceanfront 5K run as well as professional skateboard demonstrations. The festival and all events are open to the public, free of charge.

The East Coast Surfing Championships is produced solely by the Virginia Beach Jaycees, an all volunteer organization. A portion of the proceeds raised at the event benefit the Jaycee’s many charitable projects.
