Surfing
45th Annual East Coast Surfing Championships
America’s oldest surfing competition and second in the world!
August 22-26, 2007

The premier East Coast Surfing event is fast approaching.  Some of the hottest surfing talent from around the world will be coming to Virginia Beach, Va., in a few weeks.

  • This year, ECSC will be carried via live streaming video and audio broadcast over the Internet all over the world.  Last year, nearly 1,000 competitors vied for top honors.
  • Without a doubt one of the best shows we are anticipating will be from two of Brazil’s most exciting upcoming talent in the junior professional division.  Their names are Jadson Andre’ from Natal, Rio-de-Grand and Miguel Pupo from Sao Paulo.  Both are expected to be the next world champion within three to five years and we are very fortunate to have them traveling to Virginia Beach for this competition.
  • The amateur divisions will crown titles in all disciplines including legends, longboarding, shortboarding, bodyboarding, and an air show.
  • The professional divisions will be awarding a total purse of $40,000 and is sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professional (ASP) and will award valuable national rating points. This event will determine the surfers that are the top professionals to represent the USA at the Billabong World Championships in Australia.
  • Even though we have some of the best veteran surfing competitors in Virginia Beach at this event, one of the most exciting and certainly fun competitions will be held at noon on Saturday, August 25 with the Super Groms.  This division is “free” and is for competitors 9 years or younger.  Their parents typically go out in the water with them and “push them into waves”.  We often have competitors as young as 3 years old, and it is a real joy to watch the enthusiasm and spirit that is exhibited on the beach and in the water during this show!

Extreme Sports

The Capri Sun "Gear Up for Adventure Skate Tour is coming to the East Coast Surfing Championships and bringing its brand of extreme sports – BMX, freestyle inline and skateboard demonstrations.  Stop by 2nd Street and the boardwalk during ECSC and watch BMX pro Rob Nolli, Inline pro Marc Englehart and Pro Skaters Sergie Ventura and Phil Hajal at the ECSC Capri Sun Skate Park.

Music
More than a single surfing event; ECSC is a really a celebration of beach lifestyle and a celebration of beach sports, sights, sounds and people that live or visit our seaside community.  And a big portion of ECSC has always been music; indeed, ECSC has lived the soundtrack of surfing and surf culture.

In the early years, Virginia Beach Jaycees or their friends brought out acoustic guitars or blared their radios through the opened the hatch-backs to their woody station wagons.  Today, a sophisticated sound and light system cranks out big-time wattage for the thousands who come out to ECSC every year.

Spectators are treated to FREE concert performances by the best local bands, up-and-coming regional acts, emerging new rock artists and recurring legends of the alternative, progressive or “new wave” eras.

This year, in addition to the local and regional musical acts that will entertain us from the beach stage, two national recording acts will rock out the beach well into the night:

Friday night                  August 24, 2007           8:30 PM           The BoDeans
Saturday night               August 25, 2007           8:30 PM           CKY

Beach Bum Classic

Wareing’s Gym – the quintessential Virginia Beach “local’s gym” – is proud to announce the first “Beach Bum Classic.”  In what hopes to become an annual competition, the BBC will pit trim & toned athletes and aging “weekend warriors” against three uniquely “beachy” physical tests: a 1-mile soft sand beach run, a 3-mile beach cruiser bike race, and a half-mile surfboard paddle.

While you don’t have to be a tri-athlete to compete, this isn’t for the piker or the pudgy.  But there’s lots of room in the beverage tent to watch!

New Swimsuit Contest sponsors

What’s a classic American beach party without a good old fashion swimsuit contest?

For women 18 years and older, here’s your chance to strut the stuff Mother Nature gave you or show off the results of that health club membership your “ex” gave you last Christmas.

It wouldn’t be ECSC without the much-anticipated Miss ECSC Swimsuit Contest, this year sponsored by Livelinks and Croc’s Shoes.

First place prize is $1,000, Second place is $500 and Third place is $250.  Limited to 25 participants, all women will win some promotional prizes and a free pair of Crocs shoes (which they’ll wear on stage in competition).
