The Friday evening headliner will be The Original Wailers
THE ORIGINAL WAILERS
In 1974 when Bob Marley went solo, on the brink of international stardom, he surprised the music community by choosing as his lead guitarist the soft spoken, American-born Al Anderson. It was Anderson’s stunning lead work on such classics as No Woman, No Cry, and Three O’ Clock Road Block that first alerted rock fans to the Wailers’ music.
The Saturday evening headliner will be Matisyahu
Singer-songwriter Matisyahu has been on journey inward for more than a decade. The journey has been private and public. The journey has at times been explicitly external, even while being driven by internal change. Now nearly thirteen years after the release of his first studio record, Matisyahu and his band have done something unmatched in his past repertoire; they have crafted that journey into a musically thematic eight song movement.
Details for the free concerts will be made available on the ECSC Facebook page, including the time, beach street location and opening acts. ECSC has been celebrating the surfer lifestyle since 1962 and some of the most prominent surfers in the world have graced our waters as a result. ECSC is the 2 nd oldest, continuously run surfing championship in the world. Over the years, both professional, amateur and local kid/teen/adult surfers have ridden Virginia Beach waves for top honors. In the past 10 years alone, millions of dollars of prize money has been paid out for all of ECSC related events; from surfing to volleyball and its annual swimsuit pageant. For more on ECSC, check out the highlights from 2017 on their website. This year’s dates are from August 19 th – 26 th.
In addition to running and managing ECSC, the VB Jaycees have been a core group of young professionals ages 18-40 in the area since the 1940s. The group serves to promote leadership training and community involvement and their historical influence over the city includes everything from aiding in the development of the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad and public library systems to honoring the First Citizen of Virginia Beach award.
