2007 East Coast Surfing Championships Competitive
Athletic Events
From August 22nd to 26th, the East
Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) will be hosting multi-event
competitions at all levels on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
The following options are provided for all athletes seeking
to participate in the 2007 ECSC:
An estimated 600 surfers will travel from around the world
to compete in the ECSC to be held August August 22nd to 26th. The
event is the oldest continuously running surfing contest
in North America. From humble beginnings in 1963, ECSC has
evolved into a spectacle that now draws over 100,000 surfing
fans and beach lovers to watch the world's best amateur
and professional surfers compete for bragging rights, prizes
and cash.
It is no mystery why these professionals are willing to
leave great surf in their home countries to travel to Virginia
Beach. It's all about timing. ECSC is held on the last week
of August, near the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane season.
Storm activity thousands of miles south often generates
fantastic waves and surfing conditions in Virginia Beach. During this time of year, there
are few places in the world an avid surfer would rather
be.
The contest is open to surfers of all levels. Competitive
divisions include surfing, bodyboarding, and longboarding.
Each event is subdivided into age groups for men, women,
and children.
The Mahi Mah's Beach Volleyball Tournament will take place
on August 25th and 26th. This expansive tournament will take
place on 26 sand volleyball courts located between 5th and
9th streets on the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Volleyball
veterans from the Tidewater Volleyball Association will
lend their expertise in the administration of the competition
which brings some 200 contestants. Divisions include Open,
AA, A, and B. Each event is subdivided into age groups for
men, women, and coed teams
On August 25th at 8 a.m. 600 runners will line
up at 5th Street and Atlantic Avenue to compete in the ECSC's
5K run. An annual event since 1991, the run is widely popular
due to its scenic route along the oceanfront in the heart
of the resort area. Competitive teams include military (3
to 5 runners) and coed (2 male and 2 female). Divisions
are based on age groups for men, women and handicapped individuals.
The Meyer Skimboarding contest will be held on August 25th and 26th
. This year's event anticipates over 100 top
amateurs and professionals competing for valuable prizes,
trophies, and cash awards.
Skimboarding competitors use a thin wooden or fiberglass
teardrop shaped board to skim across the shore break into
the breaking waves. Each entrant will sprint down the beach
at top speed towards the surf and leap onto their board,
trying to maintain balance and perform a variety of tricks.
A panel of judges will score the competitors on length of
ride, balance, and creativity.
